If you grew up in church like me, then you probably learned to treat the Bible like your old vacation photos. Just like those photos bring back warm memories of the beach or the mountains, you’ve learned a few verses that make you feel warm and fuzzy. You know, the kind that get printed on everything under the sun (Jeremiah, 29:11, anyone?).

There’s a problem, though. You see, the Bible has 66 books . . . 1,189 chapters . . . and 31,102 verses. Some of those chapters and verses contain passages of sublime beauty and grace. Others contain passages of terror or confusion that we’d rather not think about. Not thinking about them won’t make them go away, though. They’re in there. And by avoiding anything difficult or confusing in the Bible, we remain spiritually immature. Or, Paul said, “And I, brothers [and sisters,] could not speak to you as spiritual people, but [only] as fleshly, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able [to consume it.] But even now you are not yet able” (1 Corinthians 3:1-2 NASB).
